Whitewashed Ash Round Dining Table Auckland

A round table changes the way a dining space works. There is no head of the table, circulation is easier, and everyone sits within the same conversation. For this Auckland project, the brief became a custom ash dining table with a pale whitewash finish and a strong geometric base.

The workshop photographs tell the story clearly: first the base structure, then the circular top, followed by the finished piece from several angles. Simple idea, careful execution.

Why ash suits a pale dining table

Ash has a lively, easy-to-read grain. A whitewash softens the natural colour without hiding that pattern completely, so the tabletop still looks like timber rather than a flat painted surface. The finish gives this round table a lighter presence, useful when a solid dining table needs to feel substantial without dominating the room.

The circular top also puts the grain on display. With no corners to interrupt the shape, the eye follows the boards and the clean perimeter.

A base designed for the round top

The base is more than support. Its crossed timber structure creates visual interest underneath the table while keeping the outer edge relatively clear for seating. From the side, the angular frame contrasts neatly with the curve above it.

Building this arrangement means checking balance, alignment and the relationship between the base and the tabletop from every direction. Round furniture is unforgiving that way; there is no obvious front where small inconsistencies can hide.
