Solid Oak Floating Stair Treads Auckland

Floating stairs are visually simple, which means every tread is exposed to view. There are no risers to hide the spacing and no closed stringer to soften the line. The timber, alignment and installation all have to look resolved.

This Auckland project uses solid oak treads in an open cantilevered arrangement. The three finished views show the staircase from the front and both sides, including its relationship to the wall-mounted handrail and timber flooring.

Why oak works for open stairs

Oak grain reads clearly across each tread, giving the staircase warmth without adding visual clutter. The solid rectangular profiles create a steady rhythm up the wall, while the open gaps allow light and sightlines to continue through the stair.

Matching timber tones also helps the staircase sit comfortably with the floor. It feels connected to the room, yet the floating construction keeps the overall form light.

Consistency is the main design detail

With this style of stair, repetition does the work. Tread depth, projection, spacing and level all contribute to the finished appearance. A small variation would be noticeable because each element is compared directly with the next.

The side views are especially useful. They show the cantilevered effect, the clean tread ends and the generous open space beneath the flight. The handrail follows the same rise without competing with the oak.

Custom timber stair components in Auckland

A floating-tread project needs to be coordinated with the stair structure and site requirements. Early information should include drawings or measurements, photographs of the opening, the intended timber look and details of adjacent flooring or joinery.
