Recycled Rimu Kitchen Countertop with Undermount Sink
A recycled Rimu kitchen countertop can bring warmth, character and a sense of history to a hard-working space. This custom piece was made with a clean rectangular layout, a carefully positioned undermount sink and a clear finish that allows the timber's natural colour and grain to remain the focus.
From prepared timber to finished countertop
The project began in the workshop with the countertop prepared and laid out for its sink opening. The early-stage timber has a lighter appearance, with the individual boards, grain direction and natural marks clearly visible.

As the surface was refined, the joins between the boards became part of the design rather than something to hide. The long format gives the countertop a calm visual line, while the darker natural marks in the Rimu add variation across the surface.

A precise undermount sink detail
The sink opening is central to the design. With an undermount installation, the timber edge meets the stainless steel bowl without a raised rim across the countertop. That creates a simpler transition around the sink and keeps the Rimu surface visually continuous.

The close-up views show the relationship between the polished timber edge and the stainless steel sink. This is a small area with a large practical role: it needs to look considered while standing up to regular kitchen use.

Warm finish, practical layout
The finished countertop has a warm honey-gold tone that brings out the Rimu grain and natural variation. The straight outer edges keep the overall form practical for a kitchen installation, while the sink cut-out provides the main functional detail.

This project is a good example of how recycled timber can be shaped into a precise, useful kitchen surface without losing the character that makes the material distinctive. The final result combines a straightforward working layout with the warmth and individuality of Rimu.
