Oak Floating Stair Treads and Timber Screen Auckland

A Flatbush stair project combining warm Oak floating stair treads with a vertical timber screen to keep the entry open and connected.

Oak Floating Stair Treads and Timber Screen in Flatbush

A staircase can do more than connect two levels. In this Flatbush project, Oak floating stair treads and a matching timber screen work together to shape the entry and stairwell while keeping the home visually open.

The stair treads have a clean open-riser profile, with each Oak step projecting from the wall and leaving space between the treads. Beside them, the vertical slat screen adds warmth and definition without becoming a solid partition.

Open-riser stairs with a lighter feel

The floating stair treads create a strong horizontal rhythm as they rise through the home. Their warm Oak tone sits against the light walls, while the open space between each step allows light to move through the stairwell.

There is a useful sense of separation in the design, but the staircase does not feel boxed in. The treads define the route upwards, and the open construction keeps the surrounding space connected.

The timber screen introduces a second direction to the space. The narrow vertical slats create a steady line from floor to ceiling, contrasting with the horizontal stair treads and giving the entry a more architectural finish.

The gaps between the slats are important. They provide a degree of visual separation around the stairs, while still allowing views and light through to the rooms beyond. It is a practical way to define an open-plan area without building a full wall.

The screen also gives the stair area a consistent material language. Rather than treating the treads and screen as unrelated features, the warm timber finish helps them read as one coordinated piece of the interior.

Timber details that change the entry

The finished views show how the staircase is experienced from different positions. From below, the floating steps create a layered pattern overhead. From the side, the screen becomes a warm timber backdrop. Looking across the stairs, the two elements overlap and give the space depth without making it feel crowded.

This is the advantage of a custom timber stair project: the material, tread profile and screening can be considered together. The result is shaped around the house and the way people move through it, rather than added as a standard stair component.
