Macrocarpa Vanity Top with Epoxy Finish

A live-edge Macrocarpa vanity top shaped around an expressive slab and finished with glossy epoxy resin to retain knots, grain and natural edge movement.

This vanity top is not a polite rectangle. One end broadens, the live edge changes direction and knots remain clearly visible. That irregularity is what makes the Macrocarpa slab worth using.

The workshop gallery follows both faces of the timber through shaping and finishing. A glossy epoxy resin finish then brings the grain and colour variation forward while retaining the slab's natural outline.

Designing around the live edge

A custom vanity top has to work within a room, but it does not need to erase every natural feature. Here, the outer edge remains uneven and the top tapers along its length. The design responds to the slab rather than forcing it into a standard cabinet-store profile.

The photographs also show the paler unfinished face. Comparing it with the completed surface makes the effect of preparation and finish especially clear.

What the epoxy finish changes

Epoxy adds a reflective surface that deepens the visible colour of the Macrocarpa. Dark knots, flowing grain and lighter sapwood areas gain more definition. The long angled views show how light moves across the finished top.

Because the gallery documents the top itself rather than the final bathroom installation, basin positions, cabinetry and wall details are not assumed here. Those elements would need to be coordinated for the intended space.

Planning a custom vanity top

Useful enquiry details include approximate dimensions, photographs of the bathroom, basin and tap positions, preferred edge style and the cabinet or support arrangement. A reference image can help explain how much natural character you want to retain.
