Custom Swamp Kauri River Dining Table Auckland
A river table is at its best when the join becomes part of the design. This custom Swamp Kauri river dining table uses two long timber sections with a dark central channel running between them, creating a strong line through the middle of the finished surface.
The project gallery follows the table through preparation, resin work and finishing before showing it in its dining setting. The result is warm and substantial, but the river detail gives the long tabletop a sharper contemporary edge.
Starting with two pieces of character timber
The early workshop views show the timber sections being prepared side by side. Each piece carries its own grain, colour and natural edge, while the space between them establishes the path of the river detail.

The grain runs lengthways along both sides of the table, but it does not mirror itself exactly. That is part of the appeal. The two sections meet as one piece of furniture while retaining the natural variation that makes each side individual.
Building the river detail
The central channel is the defining feature of this table. In the workshop images, it moves through several stages as the timber is prepared and the dark fill is formed between the two slabs.

The dark centre creates a clear contrast with the reddish-brown timber. It gives the eye a route across the table, while the surrounding grain keeps the surface from feeling overly graphic or hard-edged.

The finished surface brings the different elements together. The polished timber reflects light across the grain, and the dark river remains visually distinct without overpowering the wood around it.
From workshop piece to dining table
The final images show how the table works in a real room. The dark base sits below the broad top, keeping the support visually simple so the timber and river detail remain the focus.

In the dining setting, the table becomes the visual centre of the room. It has the warmth of a natural timber piece, but the dark centre gives it a more modern character. That combination is useful when a client wants a table with strong material presence that still feels considered in a contemporary interior.
This is the advantage of commissioning a custom river table. The timber, river position, finish, top proportions and base can all be considered together rather than fitted around a standard design.
