Custom Swamp Kauri Dining Table for a Karaka Home

At four metres long and 1.6 metres wide, this custom Swamp Kauri dining table was made for serious entertaining. The project record describes a table designed for a mansion in Karaka, with enough room for more than 20 people and a black steel pipe base made from different diameters.

But the scale is only part of the story. The real presence comes from the timber: a dramatic Swamp Kauri slab with a highly figured surface, natural irregular edges and a deep polished finish.

Starting with a remarkable slab

The early workshop images show the timber before it became a dining table. The slab has an uneven natural outline and large areas of changing grain, with pale sections, darker figuring and voids that become part of the finished character.

The project record identifies the wood as 50,000 years old. That history is visible in the variation of the material, but the job still begins with very practical decisions about how the slab can be prepared, supported and used.

The slab is shown at different stages of preparation, from a lighter unfinished surface through to the more defined top that emerges as it is worked. The long shape gives the finished table its generous seating capacity, while the original edge keeps it from feeling like a regular rectangular board.

Letting the grain lead

Once finished, the tabletop has a rich amber-brown appearance and a reflective surface that brings out the movement in the grain. The natural edge remains clearly visible along the sides, giving the table a softer outline despite its substantial size.

There is a lot happening in the timber, so the finish works best when it lets the slab speak for itself. The broad surface carries the visual weight, while the irregular edge gives each side a slightly different view.

The close-ups also show areas where the grain changes direction and where the live edge introduces darker, more tactile detail. These are the features that make a large custom timber table feel individual rather than mass-produced.

A steel pipe base with changing rhythm

The base was made from black steel pipes in varying diameters. Rather than disappearing beneath the top, the pipes form a strong architectural element of their own. Their vertical rhythm gives the large slab the support and visual structure it needs.

The workshop images show the steel components being prepared, including grouped pipe sections and the black structural members that make up the base.

The contrast is deliberate. The timber is highly figured, warm and organic. The base is dark, regular and industrial. Together, they stop the piece from leaning too far in either direction.

Made for a room that brings people together

The finished table is shown in its dining setting, surrounded by chairs and set against a dark interior. At this scale, it becomes more than a surface for meals. It is the centre of the room, with enough length for shared dinners, entertaining and larger gatherings.

The final views show how the natural edge runs around the tabletop and how the black pipe base anchors the piece beneath it.
