Some timber pieces are quietly regular. This one is not. The Swamp Kauri coffee tabletop in this project keeps a broad, irregular natural edge, with the grain moving through knots, darker inclusions and heavily figured sections across the whole surface.

The gallery shows the tabletop from several angles, including the finished face and the lighter underside before the final surface treatment. It is a compact piece, but there is plenty to look at.

A coffee tabletop shaped by the timber

The outline comes directly from the slab. Instead of cutting it into a strict rectangle or circle, the natural edge has been retained around much of the perimeter. That gives the tabletop a more organic presence and makes every side slightly different.

The grain is especially expressive through the centre of the piece. Golden and brown tones shift around darker marks, while the natural edge introduces smaller changes in shape and texture. This kind of slab does not need a busy design added on top. The material has already provided the visual interest.

Bringing out the depth of Swamp Kauri

The finished face has a warm, reflective appearance that brings out the depth in the timber. Light catches the changing grain, making some sections appear calm and linear before giving way to more dramatic figuring around the darker areas.

These close views show why choosing the slab is such an important part of a custom timber project. The final piece is not just about dimensions. It is about how the grain will read from above, where the natural edge will sit and which features will become part of the everyday view.

The lighter underside gives a useful contrast to the finished face. It shows more of the original pale timber and the slab's full outline, while the completed surface above has a deeper colour and stronger reflection. Together, the views show the material before and after it has been refined.

A distinctive starting point for a custom coffee table

This project is a tabletop rather than a complete coffee table, which leaves the final base and proportions open to the wider room. A natural slab like this can be paired with a simple base so the timber remains the focus, or with a more considered support that responds to the irregular edge.

The important first step is finding a piece of timber with the right character and scale for the space. From there, the edge, finish and base can be discussed as one design.
