Custom Solid Oak Vanity in Auckland
The lower section is what gives this custom vanity its character. Instead of closing the base in with another solid panel, the design uses a run of evenly spaced oak slats, bringing texture and a lighter feel to the piece.
Built from solid oak, this bespoke vanity combines clean-lined side panels with a framed upper section and an open lower shelf. It is a practical bathroom piece, but the construction has enough detail to feel like considered furniture rather than a generic cabinet.
A vanity designed as furniture
The proportions are simple and purposeful. Broad oak sides give the vanity a strong visual frame, while the open slatted bottom breaks up the mass and creates useful storage for towels or bathroom essentials.
That balance matters in a bathroom. A fully enclosed cabinet can look heavy, particularly in a smaller room. The slatted shelf leaves some breathing space underneath and lets the timber detail remain visible from different angles.

Solid oak for warmth and durability
Oak brings a clear grain and a warm, natural colour to the room. Here, the timber is doing most of the visual work, so the design keeps the lines restrained: flat panels, square framing and carefully repeated slats.
The gallery shows the vanity at several points in the workshop. The side panels, front frame and lower slats are all visible, making it easier to see how the open base is assembled. This kind of detail is one of the benefits of commissioning custom timber furniture: the finish is not limited to what comes out of a standard catalogue.
Getting the slatted shelf right
A slatted base looks straightforward, but the spacing has to feel consistent across the full width of the vanity. Each slat needs to sit cleanly within its frame, with enough room to create the open effect without making the shelf feel weak or unfinished.
The workshop images show the slats being positioned and secured as part of the build. The result is a repeated detail that gives the vanity its own identity while still keeping it calm and easy to live with.
