Custom Live-Edge Swamp Kauri Coffee Table Auckland

A sculptural live-edge Swamp Kauri coffee table with a glossy grain-rich surface and a geometric timber base, made as a one-off Auckland furniture project.

A live-edge coffee table does not need much added to it when the timber already has this much movement. This Swamp Kauri piece is shaped around a broad, irregular slab, with dark edges, bright grain and natural openings that make the outline feel almost sculptural.

The project combines that expressive tabletop with a geometric timber base. The result is a custom Swamp Kauri coffee table that feels substantial from above, but still has plenty of visual space underneath.

Letting the slab lead the design

The tabletop has no conventional straight perimeter. Its edge rises and falls in uneven sections, with several natural projections extending beyond the main body of the slab. Instead of trimming those features away, the design keeps them visible.

That choice gives the table its identity. The grain runs through warm amber, honey and darker brown tones, while the edge carries a deeper, almost black contrast. A glossy finish brings the variations forward and creates clear reflections across the surface.

A custom piece like this is less about making every line uniform and more about deciding which parts of the timber should remain part of the finished form. The shape needs to work as a table, but it can still retain the character that made the slab worth using in the first place.

Building a base with its own geometry

The base is not a plain set of legs tucked underneath. It is made from angled timber supports that meet and cross beneath the top, creating a strong geometric structure.

From the side, the supports form a series of clean planes. From above, the eye returns to the slab. That balance matters: the base has enough shape to look intentional, but it does not compete with the live edge or the grain.

The workshop views show the base before the tabletop is fully positioned, including the intersections between the supports. This is where the practical part of a custom coffee table becomes visible. The support needs to carry the irregular top while keeping the overall design visually balanced.

A finish that reveals the timber

The finished surface has a deep reflective sheen. Light moves across the slab and highlights the changes in grain, knots and colour. Around the outside, the live edge remains darker and more textured, giving the tabletop a clear boundary without turning it into a standard rectangle.

This contrast between a smooth working surface and an irregular natural edge is one of the strongest reasons to choose a live-edge design. You get a practical tabletop, but its visual character comes from the original form of the timber.

The gallery also shows how different the table looks from each side. One angle emphasises the branching edge; another shows the amber grain across the centre; a lower view brings the base into focus. It is a piece that rewards looking at it properly rather than seeing it as a single flat surface.

A sculptural coffee table made for the space

The finished table brings together three clear decisions: preserve the natural Swamp Kauri outline, use a glossy finish to show the grain, and build a timber base with a deliberate geometric form.

Because the slab is not uniform, the table has a one-off profile from every direction. The base gives it structure, while the top carries the visual interest. It is a good example of how custom furniture can work with a material's natural irregularities instead of hiding them.
