Custom Ash Timber Screen for an Auckland Stair

A fitted ash slatted screen wrapping an Auckland stair opening, providing separation while allowing light and sightlines through the interior.

Custom Ash Timber Screen for an Auckland Stair

A stair opening often needs separation, but a solid wall can make the surrounding hall feel smaller and darker. This custom ash screen takes a middle path: evenly spaced vertical battens define the boundary while light and partial views continue through.

The fitted shape also follows the stair. A solid angled lower section meets the rising line, with open slats continuing above it to the ceiling.

Designed around the architecture

This is not a freestanding divider placed near the stair. The screen is built into the opening, meeting the floor, wall and ceiling while responding to the changing level below.

Installed photographs show both sides of the screen. From the entrance it creates a clear timber plane; from the hall, the spacing keeps the stair visually connected.

Ash battens and consistent spacing

Ash gives the vertical members a light, visible grain that works well against the white interior. The repeated spacing becomes the main pattern, so alignment is important from every viewing angle.

The final image shows the screen panel during workshop assembly. It is a useful counterpoint to the installation views because it reveals the repeated frame before it became part of the room.

Custom timber screens in Auckland

A fitted screen brief should include photographs, opening dimensions, floor and ceiling details, and the degree of privacy required. Batten width and spacing can then be considered alongside the surrounding architecture.
